Expect and Prepare

Your doctor has referred you to Cardiovascular Physicians of North Atlanta for:

Treadmill Stress Test

This is a test to determine if you have blockages of the coronary arteries. You will walk on a treadmill while attached to an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) machine. Expect to be here for 60-90 minutes.

Preparation: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Do not eat four hours prior to the test. Take your medications as you would normally with a sip of water unless instructed otherwise.

Thallium Stress Test

This is a test to determine if you have blockages of the coronary arteries. It combines a treadmill stress test with nuclear imaging of the heart. You can expect to be in the office for approximately 3-4 hours.

Preparation: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. No smoking or caffeine products ingested 24 hours prior to testing. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. If you are currently taking a beta-blocker, it is imperative you tell our office before scheduling to receive more specific instructions. Otherwise, take all of your medications as usual. If you are unable to make your appointment, please inform us 24 hours in advance; otherwise, there is a $150 charge as the thallium dose is ordered specifically for you and cannot be re-used.

Echocardiogram

This is a painless, safe ultrasound examination of the heart. You can expect to be in the office for 30-45 minutes.

Preparation: No special preparation is required. If you are unable to make your appointment, please inform us 24 hours in advance; otherwise, there is a $50 charge for the missed appointment.

Stress Echocardiogram

This is a safe ultrasound examination of the heart at stress.

Preparation: Do not eat or drink four hours prior to your appointment. If you are an insulin dependent diabetic, please call the office for more specific instructions. If you are unable to make your appointment, please inform us 24 hours in advance; otherwise, there is a $50 charge for the missed appointment.

Carotid Ultrasound

This is a painless, safe ultrasound examination of the carotid arteries in the neck. You can expect to be in the office for 30-45 minutes.

Preparation: No special preparation is required.

24-Hour Holter Monitor

This is a special type of EKG that continuously monitors your heart rate and rhythm for 24 hours. It is used for detection of arrhythmia.

Preparation: No special preparation, but realize that you will have a small device (4 x 6 device) affixed to your chest area. A loose fitting shirt is highly recommended.

30-Day Event Monitor

This test uses a miniature EKG device that is worn by you to record irregularities of your heart rhythm.

Preparation: No special preparation, but you will be wearing a device for thirty days that is worn much like a pager.

T-Wave Alternan Test

This test uses special diagnostic equipment to determine if you are candidate for an ICD.

Preparation: Please call the office for more specific instructions.
